Building – birthplace of James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879), Scotland’s greatest theoretical physicist.
Modern technology – electronics, radio, TV, mobile phones etc. – are based on his work, which included
a unified theory of electricity, magnetism and light. Among other achievements, he also:
- Created and superimposed red, green and blue projections to display the first colour image – of a tartan ribbon (1861)
- Deduced the constitution of Saturn’s rings
- Introduced statistics into a dynamical theory of gases
- Analysed the operation of governors, producing the first theory of feedback control
Activities
- Open house with guides on hand.
- Viewing of artefacts, memorabilia & posters relating to Maxwell’s life and work.
- Four rooms will be open, on ground and first floors, restored as far as possible to reflect the Georgian era.

No booking required, but there is limited internal space, so access at any time will depend on numbers already in building.
