Great Tapestry of Scotland
Scottish Borders

The Great Tapestry of Scotland visitor centre opened in 2021 in Galashiels town centre. The building integrates the town's impressive Post Office building with the new Tapestry Gallery bringing the past and present into dialogue, just as the tapestry itself does.
Through 160 hand stitched panels, visitors can explore Scotland's history, heritage, innovations and culture, from the formation of the land that became Scotland to modern day. Stitched by over 1000 men, women and children, the Tapestry is one of the most ambitious community projects ever undertaken in Scotland: an artwork by the nation for the nation.
For Doors Open Days discover the Stitcher's Stories: during the creation of the tapestries, the stitching groups involved were encouraged to keep diaries detailing their real, lived experiences of the creation of one of the most ambitious community projects ever undertaken in Scotland.
Following a welcome to the Tapestry and a short tour around the gallery, you will have the chance to delve into these diaries and discover the story of Scotland's stitchers - in their own words.
Tours at 10am, 12 noon and 2pm. Tours last approx. 1 hour 15 minutes.
